The following sightings were considered the rarest sightings of Limosa (March) and Birdingbreaks (April) tours in the High Atlas and southern Morocco between Erfoud and Agadir from 21 March to 12 April 2013. On 10 April, three Moroccan Shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis riggenbachi were photographed north of Tamri. On 7 April, a subadult Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus circled above the Merzouga lake. A Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus showing characters of brookei was photographed south of Tamri on 29 March. A pair of Barbary Falcons F pelegrinoides was photographed circling above the Ourika valley below Oukaimeden on 1 April. A Temminck’s Stint Calidris temminckii was foraging at Mansour lake, Ouarzazate, on 4 April. Single Pharaoh Eagle Owls Bubo ascalaphus were seen at two sites near Rissani on 26 March and 7 April, and a roosting Egyptian Nightjar Caprimulgus aegyptius was photographed on the same dates. A migrating Roller Coracias garrulus was seen near Merzouga on 7 April. Three Lesser Short-toed Larks Calandrella rufescens were foraging along the Ikniouen road on 24 March. An Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris was hiding below the Oukaimeden skilift on 22 March. Maghreb Wheatears Oenanthe halophila were found at Amerzgane on 28 March and at Imider on 5 April. Of up to six Streaked Scrub Warblers Scotocerca inquieta east of Goulmima on 6 April, two were carrying food. In the Merzouga area, single African Desert Warblers Sylvia deserti were found both on 26 March and 7 April. Saharan Olivaceous Warblers Iduna pallida reiseri were common at Mansour lake, Ouarzazate, on 28 March and on 8-9 April with up to 10; several were present at Merzouga as well (eg, on 25-27 March at Derkaoua). On 30 March, a male Ashy-headed Wagtail Motacilla cinereocapilla cinereocapilla was singing at Tassila, Oued Massa and, on 11 April, three were found (Spanish A c iberiae were more numerous here). A Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus walked along the shore of the lake at Merzouga on 26 March. Water Pipits A spinoletta were (still) present at Mansour lake (three on 27 March, one on 4 April and six on 9 April) and at Oukaimeden (one on 2 April). Desert Sparrows Passer simplex have become difficult and were found only in isolated trees east of Erg Chebbi with two nests in a tamarisk on 26 March and two nests in an acacia on 5 April. African Crimson-winged Finches Rhodopechys alienus came to feed at the Oukaimeden skilift on 22 March (20+) and 3 April (10+). An Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana was singing at Oued Massa on 11 April. A Fennek Vulpes zerda was flushed mid-morning east of Yasmina, Erg Chebbi, on 7 April and three Gundis Ctenodactylus gundi were climbing the cliffs at Todhra on 5 April (Obviously, many of the well-known Moroccan ‘specialities’ were even more appreciated by tour members than the species listed above) (A.B. van den Berg)

Résultats actuels de la mission de Juan José Ramos Melo et de ses coéquipiers à Massa :

• Puffinus baroli, un ejemplar inmaduro volando al sur el día 21/03/2013 en la costa de Sidi Wassay (an immature flying South at Sidi Wassay on 21th March) (Juan José Ramos Melo, Pedro González del Campo & Rubén González Jañez / Birding Canarias).

 

• Larus hyperboreus, un ejemplar inmaduro volando al sur el día 6/04/2013 en la costa de Sidi Wassay (an immature flying at Sidi Wassay on 6th April) (Juan José Ramos Melo, Pedro González del Campo & Rubén González Jañez / Birding Canarias).

 

• Asio otus, se captura un ejemplar de forma accidental y es liberado posteriormente sin anillar, en la estación de anillamiento del Río Massa, Ait Lyass el 8/04/2013 (A Long-eared Owl captured at Massa on 8th April) (Juan José Ramos Melo, Pedro González del Campo & Rubén González Jañez / Birding Canarias).

 

• Referente al seguimiento de aves marinas desde Sidi Wassay, continuamos observamos un flujo de Sterna comic al norte, algunas Puffinus mauritanicus, mucho Sterna sandvicensis, Sula bassana y algunos ejemplares de Melanitta nigra. La idea es realizar un punto de observación de tres horas durante entre las 6:30 y las 9:30 una vez ala semana durante 10 semanas, del 21 de marzo al 30 de mayo (Northward migration of Comic Terns, Puffinus mauretanicus, numerous Sterna sandvicensis, Sula bassana and a few Melanitta nigra at Sidi Wassay)

 

• En la estación de anillamiento ya hemos anillado 287 aves de 39 especies (adjunto tabla de resultados en excel). Como datos interesantes debo comentarte que ya hemos realizado tres recuperaciones, un Acrocephalus scirpaceus con anilla de Lisboa, otro con anilla de British Museum London y un tercero con anilla Natural History Museum of London (They have captured 287 birds belonging to 39 species so far, including 3 recoveries: an Acrocephalus scirpaceus ringed at Lisboa, Portugal, another with a ring of the British Museum London and another one ringed by the Natural History Museum London)

 

• Continuamos con el seguimiento de grupos de Platalea leucorhodia, contabilizando ya lago más de 1300 aves volando al norte, con un total de unos 22 grupos (They have counted more than 1300 Spoonbills in 22 flocks migrating North)

 

• También cada realizamos un itinerario de 75 kilometros en el entorno del río Massa para ver riqueza y abundancia de rapaces, hasta el momento no hemos observada nada fuera de lo habitual (A 75km long trip made at regular interval near Massa to assess the richnaess and abundance of raptors has brought nothing special so far)

 

• Con respecto a la colonia de Apus de Mirleft, Ayer mismo al atardecer visitamos el lugar, la zona de cría lo forma una franja acantilada de unos 250 metros bajo el pueblo. En lugar observamos algo más de 500 ejemplares de Apus en vuelo, en su mayoría Apus pallidus y Apus apus, aunque al menos cuatro ejemplares podían corresponder a Apus unicolor. Aunque las aves permanecían muy ligados lugar, entrando en grietas y revoleteando frente al acantilado, no creo que aun estén criando. Al sur de Sidi Wassay existe una colonia de cría de Apus, en la que también es posible que exista alguna pareja de Apus unicolor. Realizaremos más visitas a estas dos zonas (They have visited the putative Plain Swift colony at Mirleft on 13th April. More than 500 Apus, mainly A. pallidus and A. apus. At least four birds can be refered to A. unicolor, but they do not think they breed. Another Apus colony is established South of Sidi Wassay, where A. unicolor can breed: they will check this later)

A likely breeding place of Plain Swift Apus unicolor found by Krister Mild, 9th April, at Mirleft South-West of Tiznit, 29.588299, -10.044913

‘The birds appeared to fly in and out of a cave at the point where the cliffs are the highest. I could see and compare 2-3 (but it could be many more) Plain with 50 Pallid Swifts (also visiting the cave)… I had excellent views in direct comparison with the Pallids. Of course I can’t be sure they were breeding but the way they behaved strongly suggested it’

Worths well a visit if you are in this region!
