A new paper from Yvonne Lawrie et al. analyses the taxonomic position and breeding range of Golden Nightjar Caprimulgus eximius. It concludes that it is closest related to Egyptian Nightjar.

• Golden Nightjar Caprimulgus eximius is an apparently sedentary sub-Saharan species with a breeding range extending from Senegal and Mauritania to Sudan. Although genetic studies of nightjars and related Caprimulgiformes have been published previously, none has included Golden Nightjar. In this study, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of a Golden Nightjar found dead in Western Sahara in April 2016 was sequenced and compared with other species in the genus Caprimulgus. It was concluded with strong support that Golden Nightjar is closely related to Egyptian Nightjar aegyptius. It is hypothesised that Golden and Egyptian Nightjars may have arisen by splitting of a single ancestral species into migratory and sedentary populations.

• L’Engoulevent doré Caprimulgus eximius est une espèce subsaharienne apparemment sédentaire avec une aire de reproduction s’étendant du Sénégal et de la Mauritanie jusqu’au Soudan. Bien que les études génétiques des engoulevents et des Caprimulgiformes apparentés aient été publiées précédemment, aucune n’a inclus l’Engoulevent doré. Dans cette étude, l’ADN mitochondrial et nucléaire d’un L’Engoulevent doré trouvé mort au Sahara Occidental en avril 2016 a été séquencé et comparé à d’autres espèces du genre Caprimulgus. Il a été conclu avec un fort soutien que l’Engoulevent doré est étroitement liée à l’Engoulevent d’Egypte aegyptius. On suppose que les engoulevents dorés et d’Égypte peuvent provenir du fractionnement d’une seule espèce ancestrale dans des populations migratrices et sédentaires.
