31 May 2017 – Observations at Dar Bouazza

The Birds of Morocco’, chapitre ‘Breeding Distribution’:

In ‘North Atlantic’and ‘Mid Atlantic’ plains, a pair probably bred on the Lower Loukkos marshes (Rharb), mid Jul 1950s (Valverde 1955-56), and again in the 1970s, eg 2 pairs on 29 Jun 1972 (M. Thévenot) but no definite proof of breeding. One pair nested near Rabat (Zaër) in 1991 (GOMAC91). Nesting suspected in Zemmour at Dayet Er-Roumi in 1980 (CROM80), in Haouz in a marsh at the Marrakech palm grove in the early 1980s (B&B, L. Lesne). In Plains of Eastern Morocco, a pair bred in 1997 and probably in 1995 and 1996 (GOMAC95-97) at Barrage Mechra Homadi and nesting also suspected at the Moulouya estuary, Jun 1980-81 (CROM80-81) and at Barrage Mohamed V, May-Jul 1996 (GOMAC96/1). Also probably bred in Middle Atlas at Dayet Afourgah, 1976 and 1980-82 (Trembsky & Trembsky 1978, CROM80- 81, R. Chalot). Lynes (1925) reported finding 2 nests in Souss in the Souss valley, but none has been found since. Breeding at the Massa estuary suspected for some years (Vernon 1973, Heinze 1979a) but only proven in 1995 (E. Rousseau). The bird at Merja Bargha, 16 Jul 1995 (GOMAC95), was probably an early migrant.
