A Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) colour-ringed as a pullus in the Czech Republic was observed at Sebkha Bou Areg (aka Marchica).

The Spoonbill was ringed on 22 May 2020 at České Budějovice in the south of Czechia (the preferred name of the country). On 30 April 2022, it was photographed at Sebkha Bou Areg, in northwest Morocco by Said Azaouaghe (the coordinator of GREPOM/BirdLife Morocco in the Oriental Region).
Why it’s interesting?
The migration of Eurasian Spoonbill from Europe normally follows three migratory routes: the Western, Central and Eastern routes (see the map below, reproduced from Blanchon et al. 2017). Almost all birds migrating through and wintering in Morocco are from Western Europe (El Hamoumi et al. 2015).
However, these migratory routes or pathways are not rigid, and sometimes birds migrate via “the wrong” route. Examples of these include a bird from the Carpathian Basin (Hungary) wintering in Morocco and Mauritania (Pigniczki et al. 2016), three birds from the Camargue (France) wintering in South Sudan (Blanchon et al. 2017), and this Czech bird observed at Sebkha Bou last month.

Une spatule blanche (Platalea leucorodia) baguée au nid comme poussin en République tchèque a été observée à Sebkha Bou Areg (alias Marchica).
La Spatule blanche a été baguée le 22 mai 2020 à České Budějovice dans le sud de la Tchéquie (le nom préféré du pays). Le 30 avril 2022, elle a été photographiée à Sebkha Bou Areg, dans le nord-ouest du Maroc par Said Azaouaghe (le coordinateur du GREPOM/BirdLife Maroc dans la région de l’Oriental).
Pourquoi c’est intéressant ?
La migration de la Spatule blanche depuis l’Europe suit normalement trois routes migratoires : la route occidentale, centrale et orientale (voir la carte ci-dessus, reproduite de Blanchon et al. 2017). La quasi-totalité des oiseaux qui hivernent ou migrent à travers le Maroc viennent d’Europe occidentale (El Hamoumi et al. 2015).
Cependant, ces routes migratoires ne sont pas rigides, et parfois les oiseaux migrent par « la mauvaise » route. Parmi ceux-ci, citons un oiseau du bassin des Carpates (Hongrie) hivernant au Maroc et en Mauritanie (Pigniczki et al. 2016), trois oiseaux de Camargue (France) hivernant au Soudan du Sud Blanchon et al. 2017), et cet oiseau tchèque observé à Sebkha Bou Areg le mois dernier.
